Half the information double the fun - a handy way to handle incomplete information
To what am i presenting a solution
How to represent characters looking at the sky and guessing the next change in weather?
How to represent players making an educated guess on the value of that necklace pillaged from the dungeon?
How to...
Well I have only ever used it for these two use cases but a more creative person than myself can sureley come up with similiar situations.\
So how do I resolve these?
Take the table of your choice.
Roll 2 dice(fitting the number of table entries) one in front of the players(or let them do the rolling themselves) the second hidden from them.
Simply add the two result and consult the table.
Make sure the table is available to the players.
Let the players make conclusions from the limited information.\
Minor Variations
If you dont wanna share the entire table with your players give them the generel trend like
"You want to roll high and can expect to sell it for 10 silver minimum"\
You may want to increase the hidden dice size and decrease the hidden ones if a player has an appropriat skill/profession.\
For non expert NPCs i like to roll a second hidden dice replacing the one rolled in front of the players to get the NPCs evaluation of the situation.
